| Sunday Telegraph (UK) 25th August 2002 UK's First Biodiesel Fuel Stop Opens RIX Petroleum has opened the first biodiesel fuel outlet in Britain, at Junction 37 Filling Station, Boothferry Road, Howden, near Goole, and will increase the number of sites selling the fuel across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire to 11 by the end of September. the company also plans to make the fuel available nationwide. The biodiesel fuel will initially be sold as a 95:5 blend (95 per cent mineral diesel, 5 per cent biodiesel), because this can be used in all diesel vehicles without the need for modifications. As a blend, it gives low exhaust emissions and is claimed to improve fuel efficiency by up to five per cent. Biodiesel is made from used vegetable oil and is a renewable energy source. RIX BioDiesel Ltd is the first company in Britain to produce, distribute and retail biodiesel on a large scale. Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) will be gradually withdrawn over the next year, starting with filling stations where demand is low. Drivers who use this fuel are advised that they can still buy 97Ron super-unleaded or 95Ron unleaded combined with an additive. The best long-term alternative, though costlier, is to fit a cylinder head with hardened valve seats. The UK Petroleum Industry Association has more information on its website (www.ukpia.com), while the Department of Transport (www.dft.gov.uk) will be producing an advice leaflet for owners of cars which cannot run on unleaded fuel only. |
