Expertise of Department/Organisation:
The Gembloux Agricultural University develops education and research on agriculture, plant production and animal production, plant protection, food and non food technology, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, agricultural and rural economy, forestry, rural engineering, environmental sciences.

The Department of Crop Production is mainly involved in field experimentation on agricultural crops: food crops, fodder crops and non-food crops, green manures, organic farming, quality of vegetable products, starch quality, protein quality. Main programmes are/has been on cereals, hybrid wheat, malting barley, on oilseed rape, lineseed, pea, faba bean, protein crops, chicory, Jerusalem artichoke,
The Dpt participates in research and development in agroenvironmental measures, farming agroenvironmental assessment, crop fertilisation, nitrate pollution prevention; technical, ecological and economical aspects of plant production.
The Dpt has taken part in the creation of several associations on malting barley, cereal production, oil and protein plants and develops co-operation with foreign institutions mainly in Western and Central Europe and North Africa.

ValBiom, a non profit association including members from agricultural side, traders, industries and scientific researchers, working to develop non food chains in Belgium. In close co-operation with Gembloux Agricultural University, the University of Louvain & the Agronomic Research Centre of Gembloux, it is in charge of the technology watch on renewable resources and energy, and of the communication and dissemination on this subject. Valbiom gets funds from the Walloon Ministry of Agriculture. ValBiom is/has been involved in many activities, projects & workgroups such as:

Partner in European INFORRM project (Industry Network for Renewable Resources & Materials)
Partner in European project NTB (liquid biofuels)
Is the Belgian Agency in ERRMA & in AEBIOM

Manage working groups in Belgium ("biolubricants from vegetable oils", "biofuels", "fibres", "wood-energy", "biomethanation")
Follow up of the Belgian Rapeseed Production on set-aside (redaction of agreements between farmers and traders, up to dating and spreading the regulation on set-aside, establishment of statistics on non food rapeseed production in Belgium).
